Planned updates to the Clean Shipping index in January 2026: from CO2 to GHG accounting

The Technical Committee of the Clean Shipping Index has decided to update the CSI requirement with new criteria. The CSI methodology will move from a CO-only category to a broader greenhouse gas (GHG) category.

The updated category expands the climate assessment beyond carbon dioxide to also include methane (CH) and nitrous oxide (NO) and upstream GHG emissions. This provides a broader basis for assessing climate performance compared to earlier CO-only assessments. The points will remain awarded on compared EEOI.

The methodological update leads to stricter requirements for all vessels assessed under CSI. At the same time, the GHG category is applied in a transparent and consistent way across all vessels, supporting fair comparison and credible performance assessment. The reporting requirements are in line with the MRV reporting.

The CSI methodology is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure that it remains relevant, transparent and beyond regulation. The updated GHG category will go live on the first week of January and applies for new certificates.
